‘Just not acceptable’: Des slams lacklustre Titans who ‘only have ourselves to blame’

Titans coach Des Hasler has labelled his team’s performance “unacceptable” and explained “we only have ourselves to blame” after a 40-24 loss to the Raiders.

His Gold Coast outfit are now last on the NRL ladder, slumping to their sixth loss in seven games which saw Hasler hand his players some heavy criticism.

Pressure is heaping on the Titans coach, with the Gold Coast’s only wins coming over the Knights twice and the Roosters in Round 4.

“We’ve been right in there at halftime in a lot of games but it’s just not acceptable, not good enough, not at this level,” Hasler said.

“Not the amount of work we put in, the amount of practice we put in. I think six of their tries they scored on last tackle… 18-12, you’ve got a right to think you’re in the game.

“Went back out and similar to Canterbury, we just let in three tries… it just kills you and then you have to try and catch up and it is always going to be difficult.

“We only have ourselves to blame.”

When asked where the Titans’ problems stem from, Hasler denied suggestions his team’s attitude was the reason behind their latest loss.

“It’s pretty easy to see,” Hasler said.

“I don’t think it’s attitude, (we have just got to) execute. It’s what you do in the NRL, it’s what you do in first grade you execute it.

Titans skipper Tino Fa’asuamaleaui was also quizzed as to why his side were unable to stave off the Raiders’ surge of tries early in the second half.

“All the messages were right, we just have to execute as individuals in moments. That’s what hurt us in the second half,” he said.

“Boys never took the game on themselves and wen’t after it to win those moments. Look at the score at the end of the game. Frustrating.”
